What Is a Thumb Crib?
A thumb crib is an oral appliance that is also known as a palatal crib. It is placed in the roof of your child’s mouth to help stop thumb-sucking. The device contains a cage and prevents them from being able to fully insert their thumb into their mouth and suck.
The “cage” is located behind the upper teeth, toward the roof of the mouth, so it keeps fingers and thumbs from entering and diminishes your child’s ability to produce any kind of suction.
The Process of Getting a Thumb Crib
When visiting Dr. Hanson and our team to discuss the idea of a thumb crib, we’ll begin by evaluating your child’s mouth and taking X-rays of their smile. If we discover that their teeth, jaw, or other facial or oral structures are being negatively affected by their thumb-sucking habit, we will recommend a thumb crib.
We’ll customize the appliance so that you and your child can return at a later date to have it put into place.
On the day of their appointment, we’ll attach the device to their natural teeth so that it fits snugly in place. It’s possible they will experience some slight tenderness initially, but this is only temporary. The biggest change will be their inability to self-soothe by sucking their thumb. You’ll need to determine how best to deal with this, whether it is providing a stuffed animal for added comfort or simply offering warm hugs to help them adjust to this change.
Benefits of a Thumb Crib
Naturally, after having a thumb crib in place for a short while, you will notice that your child is no longer sucking their thumb. This alone is worth the investment in a thumb crib. However, other great benefits include the lowered risk of your child developing a sleep-breathing disorder, gaps between their teeth, and more. You might also notice they can eat and chew more easily.
Perhaps the biggest advantage you as a parent can expect is the money you will save. By curbing this habit now, you’ll avoid emptying your savings on any orthodontic treatment they might need later on or a potentially invasive and complex facial procedure in the future.
Thumb Crib FAQs
How long will my child need to wear a thumb crib?
Because each child is different, the exact length of time they will need a thumb crib will vary depending on a variety of factors such as their individual habits and progress. Typically, it takes several months, but it could take more or less time depending on these factors.
Most parents notice positive changes soon after the placement of the thumb crib and their child’s urge to suck their thumb decreases. We will closely monitor your child’s progress and adjust their treatment plan as needed, in case they need more or less time than initially estimated.
How much do thumb cribs cost?
Although we cannot provide a specific price until your child has been seen in person, our team ensures that we will give you a clear estimate at your initial consultation, including all aspects of treatment so you know exactly what to expect.
We are proud to welcome dental insurance and flexible financing options to help keep your costs as low and stress-free as possible.
How effective are thumb sucking devices?
Thumb sucking devices have been found to be very effective at breaking thumb sucking habits, especially if the child is motivated to comply with treatment. In fact, the more motivated they are, the faster the habit will be broken.
In most cases, thumb and finger sucking habits can be broken in about six to eight months. During this time, dental changes including open bites will typically close spontaneously without the need for braces or additional appliances.
At what age should my child begin using a thumb crib?
Thumb sucking appliances should be used whenever your child’s thumb or finger sucking habit continues beyond ages four to five. As they grow and develop, thumb sucking can wreak havoc on their teeth and developing bone structure. While many parents rely on this type of treatment as a last resort, we believe that early intervention with a thumb crib is best done first to protect your child’s mouth from future damage.
