So, you made it through orthodontic treatment? Congrats! This is a moment worth celebrating, and you absolutely should. However, while your path to a straightened smile is complete, there’s still a little more work to do. Wearing your retainer is what keeps your teeth from shifting back, and caring for it properly is the key to keeping it effective (and hygienic). Whether you wear it full-time or a few times a week, keep reading. You’ll find four easy ways to take care of your retainer and make it last.
1: Clean Your Retainer Daily
Just like your teeth, your retainer needs daily cleaning to prevent bacteria and plaque buildup. But don’t reach for toothpaste! Most of them are too abrasive and can scratch your appliance.
Instead, try rinsing it with lukewarm water after removing it, applying a mild cleanser or liquid soap, and brushing it gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Whatever you do, don’t use hot water. This can warp the shape of your retainer, rendering it ineffective.
2: Store It Properly
A retainer should always be stored in its case when not in use. Leaving it on a napkin, a sink ledge, or your nightstand is the easiest way to accidentally toss it out or damage it.
Storing it properly will also keep it out of extreme temperatures (like in a hot car) and ensure it doesn’t get grabbed by curious pets or children.
In addition, be sure to clean your storage case regularly to avoid bacterial buildup. Nothing is worse than popping in a smelly or bad-tasting retainer!
3: Handle Your Retainer with Care
Retainers are fairly sturdy, but they can still be damaged if you’re not careful. Try to avoid:
- Bending wires or snapping plastic
- Wearing it while eating (unless otherwise directed by your orthodontist)
- Using it during contact sports or swimming
If your retainer ever cracks, warps, or just “feels off,” don’t force it. Call your orthodontist for an exam. They can take a look and decide if you just need a quick adjustment or a full replacement.
4: Keep Up with Orthodontic Visits
Regular checkups help ensure your retainer still fits properly and is doing its job. Your orthodontist can also clean it professionally or spot early signs of wear. Don’t wait until it no longer fits! Staying ahead can save you from restarting orthodontic treatment.
Your retainer is an important part of your orthodontic treatment, so it deserves a little attention and care. By keeping it clean, stored safely, and checked by your dentist, you’ll protect the progress you worked so hard to achieve.
