A reliable way to get a straighter smile is with braces. They are a tried-and-true way to correct a wide range of misalignments and malocclusions. You should expect some discomfort while your teeth move into healthier positions, but did you know you may develop oral sores as well? Here’s more about this minor complication and how you can prevent it!

What Are Canker Sores?

One prevalent dental problem for braces-havers and non-braces havers alike is canker sores. They are also known as mouth ulcers, but they are small oval spots that are usually white or gray with a reddish outline. They are often painful, getting in the way of you eating or speaking comfortably. Thankfully, they often heal on their own, but if they are persistent, then it’s important you have them checked by a professional.

Why Do Braces Cause Canker Sores?

These types of sores are infamous with braces because of the metal components used. The edges of the brackets and ends of the wire can irritate the soft tissues of your mouth as they rub against them. So, if you are already susceptible to this condition, then you may be even more likely to develop it when you get your orthodontic treatment.

Is There Anything I Can Do to Prevent Canker Sores with Braces?

There is some good news, though! There are ways you can prevent sores while you have braces. They can help make your journey to a straighter smile more comfortable, so here are easy ones you can try out:

  • Put dental or orthodontic wax over especially irritating areas. You can roll up a pea-sized ball in your fingers and gently press it against the metal poking you.
  • Use silicone covers to cover your brackets. Like the tip above, these help create a smooth barrier against your lip and cheeks, preventing sores.
  • Brush and floss every day to get rid of harmful bacteria. Poor oral hygiene can pave the way to sores and infection, so keeping your braces and smile clean can help reduce your risk for them.

If you do notice irritating spots starting to develop, try out the things above! They can help them heal by preventing further irritation. As well, consider rinsing your mouth with warm salt water. It can reduce pain and swelling while killing bacteria that can cause problems. This complication may be annoying, but it’s often minor. Don’t let it get in the way of a straighter smile you love.
