4 Potential Problems That Can Occur While Wearing Braces

Whether you’re happy about wearing braces to fix your misaligned teeth or not, there’s no denying that they are highly effective in achieving exceptional results. Past and current patients often express their dislike regarding the slight discomfort that comes with metal brackets and wires; however, this is to be expected. What you might not anticipate are other potential problems that can occur. Fortunately, there are ways to address them so that you don’t experience a delay in treatment. Below are four common issues you might face while wearing braces and what you can do to stay on track.

Problem #1: Soft Tissue Damage

Protruding metal and your cheeks, lips, or tongue are unlikely to play well together. Many patients experience sores that form on the inside of their cheek because of the metal brackets rubbing against the soft tissue.

Some orthodontists may suggest allowing the chaffing to continue, as it will cause callouses to form over time, reducing the amount of discomfort you experience. However, if this isn’t possible, feel free to use orthodontic wax. All you need is a thin layer over the metal bracket(s) so that it creates a barrier and no longer damages your soft oral tissues.

Problem #2: Persistent Jaw Pain

As your teeth shift, it’s normal to experience some form of jaw pain. This can usually be addressed with an over-the-counter pain reliever and should only occur when you initially receive your new braces. If you notice discomfort that steadily grows over time, though, you’ll need to call your orthodontist’s office right away.

It could be that you have temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and need additional care. If this is the case, your orthodontist may need to rethink the trajectory of your treatment and make certain adjustments. Doing so will ensure your jaw receives the attention it needs.

Problem #3: Tooth Stains

Wearing braces can cause tooth stains to occur. Certain foods, beverages, lifestyle habits, and oral hygiene routines can increase the potential for discoloration. One factor many patients often forget about, though, is that once metal brackets are removed, a small white spot may remain.

This is why many orthodontists recommend teeth whitening after finishing braces treatment, as this will give your smile the uniformity it deserves.

Problem #4: Broken Archwire

As one of the most common problems to occur among patients who wear braces, a broken archwire can easily occur should you eat something hard or suffer an oral injury. If you discover the wire is poking your cheek or scratching areas of your mouth, you’ll want to call your orthodontist to have it fixed right away.

In the meantime, you can apply wax to the wire so that it no longer hurts your soft oral tissues. Do not attempt to cut the wire, as you might accidentally swallow it.

Although potential problems are possible while wearing braces, it’s worth the risk, especially once you see the kind of results that help you feel more confident about your smile.
